George Russell born about 1595 probably in England. George died on 26 May 1694 in Hingham.
George settled in Hingham, where had a grant of five acres of land on South St., nearly opposite Thaxter’s Bridge. Subsequently, about 1646, he removed to Scituate. He purchased from Isaac Stedman his farm and a sawmill at “the green bush.” He lived on South Street, nearly opposite Thaxter’s bridge. The house stood ten rods south of the dam. He operated the mill at Greenbush until 1656, when he sold half his interest in it to John Stockbridge, and built the gristmill now [1936] standing there in company with Stockbridge. In 1665 he sold his half of the mill to Charles Stockbridge, and returned to Hingham, were he lived for the rest of his life on Main Street, South Hingham.
Children with first wife-
On 14 Feb 1639/40 George married for a second time to Jane [James] in Hingham. Jane was born ca 1606. Jane died on 22 Feb 1688/9 in Hingham.
Jane first married Philip James, second George Russell. Sometimes her surname is given as Davenport, but when that’s done, no father is named, and no marriage date is given for her marriage to Philip.
Their children include:
Deane, S. (1831). History of Scituate, Massachusetts, from its first settlement to 1831. Boston: J. Loring.
George came on the Elizabeth from London, 1636, aged 19, was of Hawkhurst, Kent, England, and settled in Hingham, where had a grant of five acres of land on South St., nearly opposite Thaxter's Bridge. Subsequently, about 1646, he removed to Scituate. He purchased from Isaac Stedman his farm and a sawmill at "the green bush." He lived on South Street, nearly opposite Thaxter's bridge.
He was not the George Russel who migrated on the Elizabeth in 1635 at age 19, enrolled at London in a group of 10 who carried a certificate of conformity from Hawkhurst, Kent, bound for New England. Instead, George Russell of Hingham arrived in 1636 and no further records are found from the George Russell who arrived on the Elizabeth. Furthermore, the George Russell of Duxbury was unrelated to these other George Russells, and no direct evidence has been found to prove that he was the son of this George of Hingham.[1]
