Biography

Samuel Joseph Russell was born in 1822, in Alabama, a son of William Russell and Minta Fowler. Samuel's father was a Major during the War of 1812. During the American Civil War, Samuel enlisted in 4th Arkansas Infantry Regiment. Originally known as the "Southwestern Arkansas Regiment", the 4th was pare of General Evander McNair's Confederate forces. Samuel was assigned to Company I – the "Polk Rifles" – of Polk County, commanded by Captain James B. Williamson. Samuel enlisted the day that the company was formed October 26, 1861, at Fort Smith Arkansas. He appears on the Company Muster Roll of George Walker, from October 31, 1861 until February 28, 1862. On March 2, 1848, Samuel married Amanda M. Taylor. They became the parents of one son:

  • William "Billy" Morgan, born December 27, 1847, in Franklin county, Tennessee, died September 5, 1913, in Farmersville, Collin county, Texas, married Melissa Moore, daughter of James Lemuel Moore and Louvice (Bean) Moore

28 year old Samuel and and 22 year old Amanda are found on the United States census of 1850, living in Alabama, with their infant son. William's year of birth is estimated on this census as 1849, in Tennessee. With Samuel and Amanda, are 27 year old William Russell and 20 year old Mary A. Russell with their infant daughter, Jane. On September 6, 1854, in Sevier, Arkansas, Samuel married Sarah Ann Gilliam, a daughter of Solomon Henry Gilliam and Lucretia Thompson. [3] Children of Samuel and Sarah Ann include:

  • Joseph Solomon Russell, born 1855, in Sevier county, Arkansas, died 1896, in Farmersville, Collin county, Texas, married Amelia Frances Tollett
  • Martha Francis Russell, born April 13, 1865, in Arkansas, died January 18, 1917, in Emory, Rains county, Texas, married Matthew Payton Strickland
  • James McKinley Russell, born February 2,1869, in Polk county, Arkansas, died March 2, 1960, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, married Louise Francis Oldham, the daughter of Tapley A. & Margaret Adeline (Butler) Oldham.
  • Austin Keaton Russell, born March 27, 1871, in Hickman, Scott county, Arkansas, died December 9, 1955, in Scott county, Arkansas, married 1) Annie May Smith and 2) Ida E. Oliver

Samuel Joseph Russell died in 1884, in Waldron, Scott county, Arkansas and is buried in the Square Rock Cemetery, in Waldron. [4] His second wife headed to Texas with her children, where she died in 1912.
