Biography

Barbara Russell

She was born November 9, 1727 and is the daughter of George Russell and Mary Kendrick. She died about 1780.

Barbara was born in 1727. She passed away in 1789. [1]

Slaves

Barbara (Russell) Dodson was a slave owner. She was "lent" three slaves when her husband Abraham died after he wrote his 1769 will.[2] They were:

  • "my negro man Adam," to "my dearly beloved wife Barbary," and after her death, then to his daughter Tabitha Dodson (and by proxy, her husband).
  • my negro girl Alice," also to his wife Barbara, and after her death, to his son Enoch Dodson
  • my negro girl Judah," also to his wife Barbara, and after her death, to his son Greenham Dodson

Research Notes

In Virgina law at the time of Abraham Dodson's will in 1769, women could not legally own slaves. That is why Abraham's will specified that he was "lending" his slaves to his widow and that after her death, the slaves should be transferred to specific children.
