Biography

John Russell was born in England, possibly at Caton, Lancashire (based on location of his first marriage[1]). There is no evidence as yet found that he was born in Ipswich, a location which appears to apply to one of the many others of the name John Russell.

John married Elizabeth Rakestraw on 3 November 1639 at Caton, Lancashire, England. [1] After the death of his first wife, Elizabeth, on 16 December 1644[2], he married Elizabeth Baker on 13 May 1645[2] in Woburn, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. His second wife, Elizabeth, died on 17 Jan 1689/90.[2]

John Russell arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1640.[1]

John Russell was one of the earliest inhabitants of Woburn, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, being a subscriber to the Town Orders for Woburn drawn up at Charlestown in 1640.[3][2] He was a shoemaker by trade and held the office of Sealer of Leather at Woburn. He was also a Selectman for many years and in 1664 appointed to the select committee of seven for distribution of property at Woburn.[3][2] Also in 1664 was identified in the town records as a Deacon of the Orthodox Congregationalist church; although in 1669 he can be found a member of the Baptist church of Boston that met on Noddle’s Island and became an Elder of this church.[3][2] He was tried on 19 December 1671 at Charlestown for his participation in the Baptist church and jailed for some time as a result.[3][2]

His will was dated 27th of 3rd month 1676 (27 May 1676), and named his wife Elizabeth, son John and daughter Mary Brooks.[4][3][2] in Woburn, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. He died on 1 June 1676 at Woburn[3][2] and was buried in the First Burial Ground in Woburn.[5]

Research Notes

Disambiguation:Many have confused John Russell (d.1676) of Woburn, Massachusetts with John Russell (abt.1597-1680) (1597-1680) of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Wethersfield, Connecticut For reference, John Russell of Cambridge and Wethersfield, Connecticut is well described in "An Account of Some of the Descendants of John Russell, the Emigrant", by Gurdon Wadsworth Russell available at archive.org (pp 109-116).

Posible origins: The NEXUS Newsletter (New England Historical and Genealogic Society) describes John Russell's wife as Elizabeth Rakestraw daughter of Thomas and Magdalen Rakestraw; and that John and Elizabeth were married on 3 Nov 1639 in Caton, Lancashire; also footnote #3 describes John's parents as Henry Russell & Jennet Hodgson.[1]

This profile currently lists John Russell's birth location as Ipswich, "sourced" to a Findagrave Memorial. I'm surprised to see Findagrave used on WikiTree as a "Source" for something other than burial location, particularly a Pre-1700 profile with our more stringent standards. The NEHGS article in the NEXUS Newsletter (v.4 pp.19-20) makes it fairly clear that John was from Lancashire. I recommend removal of the birth location of Ipswich. For more information on the John Russell of Ipswich, see "An Account of Some of the Descendants of John Russell, the Emigrant", by Gurdon Wadsworth Russell at archive.org

It was a different John Russell who was reportedly son of Ann Arnold and William Russell (not Ralph). Disconnecting

The father of this person was removed without comment. The mother has impressive lineage and she needs to be confirmed. This person also needs to be confirmed as a resident of MA in 1636. That would make this qualify as a PGM profile.

Find A Grave thinks his son John was the child of a previous wife.
