Biography

Elizabeth (Russell) Roebuck was a daughter of John Russell, a Virginian who migrated first to Ross County and later to Lawrence County, OH, where he died and left a will. John Russell wrote his will May 18, 1820 and it was probated April 11, 1825. He mentioned his daughters, Rachel Roebuck and Elizabeth Roebuck. He left land to his sons Jeremiah and Sanders in Ross County on the banks of Walnut Creek. Other sons and daughters included Jemima, Ann, Ginzeey, Arminia, Thomas, Manoah, and Francis who was under age. Three other sons named James, John and Lawrence were mentioned. Birth and Early Life

Elizabeth Jemima Russell, known as Jemima was born about 1791 in Virginia, United States to John Russell (1743-1822) and Patience Hannah Rankin (sometimes surname used for her is Piles) (1773-1852). She was the first of eight children in this marriage. Her father's first marriage to Susannah Day (1749-1794) resulted in four known children.

Marriages and Family

Jemima married Benjamin J. Roebuck (1784-1842) on 6 July 1807 in Ross County, Ohio.[1]

  1. Lorenzo Dow Roebuck was born on 9 August 1808 in Ross, Ohio, United States. He married Lillian Ann Vinson, known as Lily (1810-1897, on 31 December 1829 in Ohio. Lorenzo died on 6 September 1860 in Mercer County, Ohio, United States.
  2. Frances Roebuck was born on 6 October 1812 in Ross, Ohio, United States. She married 1) Corbin Tullis (1806-1840) on 14 May 1835 in Mercer County, Ohio and 2) William Cain (1821-1878) on 13 November 1847 in Mercer County, Ohio. Fanny died on 19 January 1883 in Celina, Mercer, Ohio, United States.
  3. Susan Roebuck was born c. 1813 in Mercer County, Ohio, United States. She married Nicholas M. Shanklin (1808-1890). Susan died in c. 1845 in Mercer County, Ohio, United States.
  4. James Roebuck was born c. 1815.
  5. Greenly William Roebuck was born c.1818.
  6. Martha Jane Roebuck was born on 4 October 1819 in Mercer County, Ohio, United States. She married Crawford Lomis Shanklin (1819-1875) about 1842. She died on 15 November 1858 in Mercer County, Ohio, United States.
  7. Russell Roebuck was born c. 1820.
  8. Elizabeth Roebuck was born c. 1822.

Death and Burial

Jemima died on 1 September 1851 in Mercer County, Ohio, United States at the age of 60 according to the cemetery record. She was buried in the Roebuck Cemetery, Rockford, Mercer, Ohio.[2]
