Biography

Research Notes Joanne Coombs

Volume 2 of "Kinfolks A Genealogical and Biographical Record of … " by William Curry Harllee is the main reference for Rhoda being a Russell.

Page 1614 of Volume 2 Benjamin Curry - Register Benjamin Curry son of Benjamin Curry and Martha Albury married Sophia Ann Albury in Key West, Florida. Sophia Ann is shown as the Granddaughter of Mrs. Rhoda (Russell) Albury referenced as R40a. On page 1693 Sophia is shown as the third wife of Benjamin Curry, married March of 1884. Again referenced as: “Sophia Ann Albury was granddaughter of Rhoda (Russell) Albury (R40a).”

Russell R40a is referenced on page 1822. R40a Rhoda and her sister R40b Amelia Russell were probably born on Eleuthera in the Bahamas and their parents are unknown.

There is some speculation about William Albury and Rhoda. Is the wife Rhoda Russell or Rhoda Curry? William Albury is a very common name on Harbour Island so it is very possible that there were at least two William Albury’s who happened to both marry women named Rhoda. One Rhoda Curry and the other Rhoda Russell. It should be noted that Rhoda Curry was not mentioned as Rhoda Albury in her fathers Will that was proved in 1809 she was listed as Rhoda Curry.

As for children, there are Christenings for children whose parents are listed only as William Albury and Rhoda in three different church records. St. John’s Anglican Church on Harbour Island, St. Matthews in Nassau and Harbour Island Methodist Church.

No last name is indicated for Rhoda, though there is a notation by one transcriber on one of the Christenings that Rhoda may have been a Curry.

William Albury and Rhoda Russell appear to be from Harbour Island. John Albury dob 18 July 1804, Richard Albury dob 4 June 1808 and Wm. Thomas dob 20 September 1810 were all Christened at St. John’s Anglican Church.

There are two other children whose parents are listed as William Albury and Rhoda. These children’s Christening was registered in Nassau, St. Matthew’s Church. Where William and Rhoda Russell in Nassau for the births and Christenings of two other sons? William Benjamin 12 July 1806 and John Augustus 28 September 1812. If so, all their children were each born 2 years apart. 1804, 1806, 1808, 1810 and 1812. But why two son’s named John and two William? Did John die as an infant, and William Benjamin also? Why name another son with the same first name? Is there another couple who are the parents of John Augustus and William Benjamin from Nassau?

That leaves Emma Clementine dob 1824. This being 12 years later and registered at yet another church, Harbour Island Methodist Church. She possibly could be the child of William Albury and Rhoda Curry as some speculate.

Date of Death Unknown
