George's father died in 1816, likely leaving him an orphan, as there is no mention of his mother in the settlement of Samuel's estate.
In his grandfather's will in 1826, Jacob leaves "Mary Russel Samuel's daughter twenty pounds. Daniel and George Russel ten pounds each, lawful money."[1] Not absolutely certain that Daniel and George are Samuel's children, but this seems likely.
He is likely teh George Russell who married Catherine Long on February 26, 1840 in Fredericton, New Brunswick.[2]
Together they had 6 children:
In February 1870, George and Catherine divorced. George died on January 27, 1875 in Maine, United States. He was buried in the Linneus Cemetery in Linneus, Maine. Despite their divorce, when Catherine died in 1897, the family buried her with George in the Linneus cemetery.[3]
George Russell Cousins of Fredericton
There are at least three George Russell's, all born within a few years of each other in Fredericton or nearby . All are descendants of Jacob Russell UE (1744-1827) and details of their lives are frequently confused in online trees.
This profile represents George Russell (bef.1816-1875). His date of birth is uncertain and different records offer a variety of dates for his birth. But the death of his father Samuel Russell in 1816 indicates that he must have been born by then. Unlike the other two George's, he remained in the area of Fredericton and the neighboring border region of Aroostook County, Maine. He is frequently shown as both the husband of Catherine Long and as the son of Jacob Russell Jr., baptized in 1825.
George Frederick Russell (abt.1827-1897), who became a seaman and eventually settled in Australia, is regularly shown to be the son of Jacob Russell Jr., although evidence is now clear that he was the son of John Russell.
George Frederick Russell (bef.1825-aft.1910) who was the actual son of Jacob Russell Jr. and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Deforest) Russell. He settled in Washington County, Maine. Many trees list his name as George Franklin Russell, but there does not seem to be any evidence for this although he does have a son who was named Horace Franklin Russell. His eldest son was named George Russell with middle initials FW. No record of what the 'F' stands for has been found, but as an adult he frequently was known as Willis. As Jacob Russell Jr. and his wife also baptized a son John Willis Russell, this helps to confirm that this man was indeed the George Russell who was their son.
