Born in 1577 Thomas Russell was the eldest son of John Russell of Strensham in Worcestershire and his wife, Elizabeth Sheldon. [1] He was educated at St John's College, Oxford and succeeded to his father's estates in 1593 aged 16.[2]
On 27 June 1597 at Strensham he married Elizabeth Spencer, [3] daughter of Sir William Spencer of Yarnton in Oxfordshire, and his wife, Margaret Bowyer. She bore him 2 sons and 3 daughters. [4] The listed children were William, Thomas, Margaret, Anne and Elizabeth. [5][6]
Thomas was returned to Parliament as member for Worcestershire in 1601 and knighted in 1603 [7]but by 1610 had openly declared himself a Roman Catholic like his mother which ended his public life. He died on 30 December 1632 [8] and was buried at St John the Baptist, Strensham. [9][10]
British History online wrongly names his wife as Frances Reade [11] but she was the wife of his son, William. [12]
