- He married Eleanora Robertson, daughter of Principal Robertson, by whom he
had:
- 1. Mary, bom 28th March 1779.
- 2. Bethia, born 28th July 1781.
- 3. Eleanora, bom 19th May 1788.
- He appears to have married for his second wife, Cecilia Murray
and had two sons :
- 1. John, born 19th March 1811.
- 2. William, born Ist March 1813.

somebody left this note "There was indeed a John Russell born at Edinburgh on 22 Jan 1753 but was he the same John Russell who later married Eleanora Robertson? That is harder to prove!"
