Captain William Russell, Jr. served in the War of 1812 [1]
Davy Crockett served several times during the Creek Indian War 1813-1815 in the companies of volunteer riflemen lead by Major William Russell, who was William, Jr.'s father. Crockett always called the father "Old Major Russell" because he served also with Captain William Russell (1789-1860) in the Creek Wars. "Old Major Russell" also had a son, George Russell (1795-1831) who was chosen by Crockett to his first scouting mission in the Creek Indian War. A photograph of Major Russell's home is found on this Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150298361532618.358409.196361147617&type=1 [This is a replica.]
In 1807, in Franklin County, Tennessee, William Russell, Jr. married Lydia Bean, daughter of Captain Jesse Bean and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Bean. In 1833, they moved from Franklin County to Crawford County, Arkansas with Lydia's father, Jesse.
"Captain Russell and his family emigrated to Western Arkansas in 1833, and settled on Little Mulberry, which was then, as now, in Crawford county where many of his descendants are still living. His death occurred on May third, 1860, in the 72nd year of his age. He was survived by his wife and a large family connection, who with an extension circle of acquaintances and friends mourned the loss of an honest, upright and worthy citizen, soldier and patriot."
