Biography

John was born about 1756. John Russell ... He passed away before 1821.

John Russell is documented extensively from 1785 to 1814 on both the Personal Property Tax lists and the Land Tax lists in Washington County, VA. He first appears on the property tax list in 1785 and on the land tax list in 1786. He lived on the same property, although in 1815 and 1816 he is shown in Scott County, VA. He did not move; Scott County was created. John is found in 1817 in the Missouri Territorial Census. The sale of his property in Virginia in 1816 matches this time frame. He lived in Femme Osage Township, St. Charles County. John's sons Henry and Patterson also lived in Femme Ossage Township in 1817. Abraham Nordyke Foley, who married John's daughter, Barsheba, is also found in the 1817 Femme Osage Township census. John moved west to Boone County, MO. His son, Patterson, and son-in-law, Abraham Foley, also moved to Boone County. John died there. His probate documents are dated 20 Aug 1821.

Findagrave (unreliable at best especially when there is no gravemarker) states the following “John Russell lived in Washington County, Virginia, 1790-1816. The part of Washington County where John lived changed to Scott County in 1814. John moved his family to Boone County Missouri around 1816.

John Russell died and his will was administered at Columbia, Boone County on August 21, 1821 by his son, Patterson Y. Russell. His widow, Barsheba was still alive at this time, but she died a short time later in Boone County. ”[1]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
