Matthew Rust was born around 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.[1] He was a son of Wlliam Rust and his wife Monica (maiden name unknown).[2]
On 14 Jun 1774, Matthew was one of the men who signed the patriotic resolutions adopted by the citizens of Loudoun County, Virginia.[3] On 2 Oct 1780, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant of Loudoun County Militia.[4]
On 7 Jul 1791, Matthew married Martha Triplett, daughter of Colonel Simon Triplett.[2][1]
