Edward Gent Rutledge was born about 1721 in , , son of Thomas Edward Rutledge (1705 - 1791) and Jean (Armstrong) Rutledge (~1711 - 1791).

His brother was James Rutledge Sr (1748 - 1834).

Edward (~29) married Sarah Armstrong (~15)(1735 - 1823) in 1750 in Augusta Co., VA. Their children were:

  3. Lucy (Rutledge) Allison (1754 - ~1792)

Will of Edward Rutledge: This is the Will of Edward Rutledge, spouse of Sarah Armstrong. Edward Rutledge Will I Edward Rutledge of the County of Augusta and Commonwealth of Virginia do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament. I give and bequeath unto my dear wife Sarah Rutledge the bed on which she usually lies with the beadstead and a sufficient quantity of covering for it. One chestnut colt and mare named Clarence, one cow, her chioice of all I possess. Her saddle and spinning wheel, my hat, my large bible and a sermon book by Andrew Gray. Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rebeckah Rutledge the sum of five pounds. Item. I give and bequeath unto my son James Rutledge my great coat, one brown cloth coat, my breches, stockings, hone and razor. Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rosana Rutledge one bed commonly called her own with the bedstead and usual covering, her spinning wheel, one large kettle which I purchased for her, four sheep and a quantity of spun cotton now in this house. Item. I give and bequeath unto my son George Rutledge one young black mare four years old next spring. One young brown cow three years old next spring, four sheep, my cotton coat, Lagathy coat, and wettcoat. Item. I give and bequeath unto my son in Law John Allison three pounds to be laid out in schooling his two sons viz John Allison and James Allison. Item I give and bequeath all my books not bequeathed above to be equally divided amongest my five children viz Lucy Allison (wife of John Allison junior) Rebeckah Rutledge , James Rutledge, Rosana Rutledge, and George Ruledge. And so I do further direct that if it should appear that I have now more grain upon hands than will be sufficient for the support of my family the coming summer, that overplus vbe sold and the price applyed towards the payment of taxes now due or to the discharge of my debts. //// This portion is unreadable/// children viz Mary Erwin, wife of William Erwin, Lucy Allison wife of John Allison junior, Rebeckah Rutledge, Sarah McNeely, wife of George McNeely, James Rutledge, Rosana Rutledge and George Rutledge one share each. And I do hereby constitute and appoint William Allison, John Allison Junr. and David Stephenson the Executors of this my last will and testament in writing whence of .... have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this thirty first day of January one thousand seven hundres and eighty seven. (He signed) At a court held for Augusta County Feb. 20, 1787 This last will and testament of Edward Rutledge deceased was presented in Court by David Stephenson gent, one of the executors therein named and proved by the oath of Gilbert Case and Samuel Steele two of the Witnesses. thereto and is ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said executors made oath according to law certificate is granted him for obtaining probat thereof in due form he having ///// with Hugh Danaghe his security entered into bond L500. according to law and William Allison another of the exrs, named in the said will refused to take //// on thereof and leave is issued for John Allison the /// exrs to join in the probate...
