James was born in 1897. He is the son of Morris Ryan and Minnie Russell. He passed away in 1972. [1]
James Luther worked for the R & G Pipeline Company, owned by his brother, Joseph Henry “Hank” Ryan. He also worked as a laborer, wood cutter and did odd jobs during the years of the depression when he lived in Oklahoma. His known places of residence were Nevada, Missouri; Mounds, Oklahoma; Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Russell, Kansas; Levelland, Texas; Coates, Kansas; and Medicine Lodge, Kansas. He did not serve in the military and did not receive much education as a child but could sign his name. Either he could not read or did not read well. J. L. loved horses and owned a palomino horse named “Chief” when he lived on a farm near Coates, Kansas. He collected ceramic and metal horse sculptures and enjoyed making and painting plaster-of-Paris molded animals, such as chickens and horses, which he gave as gifts to family and friends. He raised chicks, owned laying hens and other farm animals and enjoyed growing a vegetable garden. One family photo shows him standing beside a field of corn that was twice as tall as he. He was a life-long smoker and later in life smoked unfiltered Camel cigarettes. He was not a drinker of alcohol. Luke likely suffered from COPD in his later years and became an invalid (was unable to walk on his own) during the year before his death. He was moved into a nursing or “rest” home in Medicine Lodge. This made him very, very angry. He never reconciled to living there and died within a few months.
