Biography

According to the death certificate of Thomas Ryan, (1) he was a farmer, (2) he was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, about 1830 (being 78 years old when he died in 1908[1]), (3) he married Mary O'Connor when he was 40 years, that is, in 1870[2] at St Francis Catholic Church, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and (4) he had lived in Victoria for 60 years after he emigrated to Australia in 1850.

According to the birth certificate of Thomas Ryan's daughter, Catherine (Cecily) Ryan, her father, Thomas Ryan, was aged 53 years and he was born at (what the handwriting appears to read) Gordon, County Tipperary, Ireland. I believe that, instead of Gordon (I am unaware of any such townland or place in County Tipperary as 'Gordon'), his birthplace is probably Golden. The informant was Catherine's sister, Mary Ryan. There is a townland called Gorteen in the civil parish of Rathlynin (Catholic parish of Knockavilla). However, I can't find any Ryans in Gorteen in either Griffiths Valuation Record or the Tithes Applotment Books 1823-37. Gorteen is near the townlands of Clonlusk and Drishane.

If Thomas Ryan was 53 when Catherine was born on 1 January 1886, this indicates that Thomas was born about 1832.

According to the marriage certificate for Thomas Ryan and Mary O'Connor, (1) both parties were born in County Tipperary, Ireland, (2) Thomas was 34 years and Mary was 24 years, (3) the parents of Thomas Ryan were Edmund Ryan and Margaret Carroll and the parents of Mary O'Connor were John O'Connor and Alice McCormick, and (4) the witnesses were William O'Connor and Margaret Bourke.

Thomas Ryan's daughter, Catherine Cecily Ryan, was the informant for her father's death certificate.

My gr, gr grandfather Michael Ryan married Eliza Houlehan (Askeaton, County Limerick, Ireland) who was one of the 1400 Irish Female Orphan immigrants sent to Australia in the 1850s) in the famous St Mary's R.C Church in Sydney 13.6.1853 and later settled in my home town of Inverell, Northern NSW Australia.
