Biography

James was in his teens when he came to New Zealand in 1876. After arriving at Bluff with his parents and siblings he worked for the Hamiltons at Forrest Hill in Southland and then as a share cropper at Taterepo. In 1894 he purchased his first farm at Heddon Bush. He purchased Taterepo in 1909.

James married Margaret Peattie-Pattison Clark in 1890 at the home of Tom Clark, Heddon Bush by Rev Robert Ewen of Calcium (Isla Bank) Parish in the presence of Charles Henderson and Agnes Clark. The records are in the register at Isla Bank Church.

Margaret was from a Protestant family and to marry a Catholic was in those days, not the done thing! James had arrived in New Zealand with his family from Tipperary, Ireland in 1876 and they were naturally all Catholic. There was a story that tar was placed under the horse saddles of the bride and groom while they were getting married but perhaps this has been embellished over the many years? They settled at their then Heddon Bush farm before buying Tatarepo in 1909.

James died in 1923 and is buried at Otautau Cemetery, Southland, New Zealand. He was 62 years old.
