I have always been interested in family stories. I more often refer to myself as a family historian than a genealogist. I like to tell stories. I remember a family reunion in the Gold Country in California. We took a walk up to the local cemetery. I stood behind a row of graves and pointing to the first, said "this is great great grandpa." Jaws dropped. Much of my family had no idea that their ancestors had traveled here in a wagon during the gold rush, then stayed to raise cattle. They had no idea much of that early family was buried in this row of graves behind a little church on a hillside.[1] I was hooked.

I was also fortunate that my mother and cousin had done research years before me.

Fun Family Facts

I am cousin to 31 presidents [2]

Greetings Catherine,

If we look back to the beginning of the 16th century we find a common ancestor making us 15C2R... Any help you can provide in cleaning up the Harkins duplicates and incorrect info is appreciated!

I am working on Harkins (my husband's line) as I am able. There are many interesting stories, some turning out to be true but many are not.

We are related through an unknown great grandfather I found through DNA and paper research. Wilford Ryan Mystery Thanks for the help looking at profiles. Catherine

Thank you, Catherine for changing the Biography on the profile of Archibald Eckels, a profile which I was manager until yesterday when it was suggested that I should remove some of the profiles for which I was manager, for I was carrying too many to do a good job on them. I appreciate your assistance and your friendship as a genealogist.

We all take on projects then life happens. This clean-a-thon I worked on simple technical corrections that make the Biographies more clear. My life is overwhelmed with caring for my octogenarian parents during the world situation. It was nice to take some time off for what I enjoy. It also reminds me to go back and work on my own. Something about it being easier to clean your friends house than your own.

Thanks for updating John Hood, Catherine. How does WikiTree handle a change in middle name? My grandfather John Hood was born with Matthew as his middle name, but changed it to Angus sometime in the very early 1900s. No idea why.

Hi Catherine,

Would you please change the privacy level for your DNA-tested cousins from 'private' to 'private with public biography and family tree' so that people not on their trusted lists can see how you're related and see information about their DNA tests. Thanks! Kay Wilson

I see that you just did the Pre-1700 Self-Certification. That's great! Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Maybe you have some historically-significant ancestors? Participation in a project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Be sure to also check out our Volunteer Hub to see our projects that really need new members!

Let me know, and I can help you figure out if there's a project that might interest you. Welcome aboard, we are glad to have you!
