CHAPTER FOURTEEN: MARY RYCKMAN
Mary Ryckman, daughter of John Ryckman and Susannah Brown, born August 6, 1765, baptized September 1, 1765. Witnesses: Tobias Ryckman and his wife Cornelia. She had been sponsored by Tobias Ryckman and Cornelia his wife. She married John German (born about 1740 died 1800) around 1784-1785 in Addington Township, Lennox County. John's first wife's name was Grace they married in 1763 and they had five children.
John and his first wife and five children had lived at Ford Edward. He joined Major Edward Jessup's Company, 2nd Btn., Kings Loyal American Regiment in 1776 and served throughout the war with his three sons, John Jr., Christopher and Jacob. When it became apparent that the Rebels were winning, Grace and her daughters were forced to leave their home at Fort Edward, New York, sacrificing all their worldly possessions, the home they had built, a new wagon, stock, implements and furnishings to the Rebels. On October 11, 1778 John German Sr. was made a Corporal, later a Sargent and later still a Major.
John and his family left New York with Major VanAlstine and other Loyalists in the fall of 1783. They wintered in Sorel, Quebec where John's family were housed with the families of other officers rather than the families of the enlisted men. Then in the spring of 1784 the group of 248 traveled by bateau to Adolphustown.
As a United Empire Loyalist family, they settled on land "past Hagerman's Point and up the creek about 1/4 mile". (The creek was Hay Bay on Lake Ontario). The land that John German drew was described as Lot 22, 4th Concession of Adolphustown.
Paul Huff gave a lot for the first Methodist Church to be built in Ontario Province, which was known as Hay Bay church, where many generations of the German family members preached and worshiped.
It is believed that Grace died soon after settling on Lot 22.
