Daniel served as Sergeant in the Middlesex Regiment, Labour Corp, in England, between 1914 - 1918. In 1923 he arrived in Canada (via Quebec), and went to work in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, as a coal miner for Dominion Coal Co. He joined his family (spouse Gertrude and their four daughters) in Victoria about 3 years later (they had preceded him in emigrating to Canada in 1922). From then on until his retirement in 1951, he worked for the City of Victoria as a City Worker.
