Biography

John Sackville (by 1484-1557) of Mount Bures, Essex, Withyham and Chiddngly, Sussex was the 1st s. of Richard Sackville of Withyham by Isabel, da. of John Digges of Barham Kent and bro. of Richard Sackville. He m. (1) by 1507, Margaret, da. of Sir William Boleyn of Blickling, Norf., 3s. (Christopher, John and Richard Sackville) 3da and (2) by 1534, Anne, da. of Humphrey Torrell of Willingale Doe; Essex, s.p.

John married twice. His first wife was Margaret Boleyn daughter of Thomas Boleyn of Blickling, Norfolk. [1] Margaret would become aunt to Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII.
They were married sometime between October 1505 when Thomas Boleyn wrote his will and Margaret was still unmarried, and 1507 when their first son Richard was born. [2]

They had the following known children: [1]

  • Richard - eldest son and heir, born in or before 1507
  • Christopher - the second son
  • John - the third son
  • Anne - married Edward Pelham
  • Mary - married John Lunsford
  • Isabel - married John Ashburnham

John died on 26 September 1557, probably at his manor house in Chiddingly. He had made his will the previously year describing himself as "of Chiddingly". [2] In his will he requested to be buried "within the church of Witheham if I chance to change this uncertayne liffe at Chiddingleigh". [3] and the diary of Henry Machyn, Citizen of London confirms that he was buried there. [4] The church at Withyham had a chantry chapel for the Sackville family which was destroyed by a lightening strike in 1663. All the pre-1663 monuments were lost and the church register was burned.

Inquisition Post Mortem

An Inquisition Post Mortem was held after John's death. [2] It noted that he had died on 26 September in the "4 and 5 of Philip and Mary" which was 1557. [5]
His son Richard "aged 50 and more" was his heir.
The ancestral manors were named as "Buckherst, Chalvington, Chidinglie, and Bowlie".
The premises were inherited from his father Richard Sackville, who in his turn had inherited them from his father Humphrey Sackville.
Other lands and manors mentioned included Sedlescombe which passed to John's son Christopher and his son John.
It was noted that John had made a will dated 1 July 1556 as "John Sackville of Chiddingly Esq"

Will

The will was contested by the eldest son Richard who was not named in the said will. The defendants were John's widow Anne and Sir Nicholas Pelham. Probate was granted two years after John's death on 16 October 1559. [3]
