Biography

Private James Sage served with 5th Virginia Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

James Sage is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A099114.

James was born 26 Aug 1749. He married Lovis Ott in Virginia{Maryland} in 1780. Baker for King George III. Accused and sentenced for stealing. Exiled to America, July 23, 1773. Sailed on Tayloe (Captain John Ogilvy). Arrived in Williamsburg, Virginia October 7, 1773. Private in the American Revolution. 7th Virginia regiment. James passed away 17 Mar 1820. ^{[1][2][3][4][5]}

"James Sage was a soldier in the War of the Revolution. He belonged to the brigade of Gen. Enech Peore (see REF below), and did service under the eye of Washington at Monmouth, Brandywine, Valley Forge and Yorktown. In 1780 he married a lady in Fredericktown, Maryland, and after the surrender of Lord Cornwallis (October 19, 1781) he and his young wife moved west and settled on Cripple Creek, in what is now Wythe county, Va. (Wythe County was formed from Montgomery County in 1790) , and remained there about ten years. He then moved to Elk Creek (~1791), in Grayson county, Va., and there spent the remainder of his life..."^[6]

Quoted from "March of the Sages" "In her application for a pension in 1851, Lovis stated that James served 8 months in 1779 as a private in Capt. Robert Sawyer's company; 6 months in 1781 with Capt. James Montgomery; 6 months in 1782 with Capt. John Montgomery, under Col. John Rual; also 6 months under the last-named captain, in Col. Crockett's regiment. He was drafted in 1781 and 1782, but volunteered in 1783. She stated that he was discharged in Pennsylvania, but left his discharge in a pair of buckskin trousers. She was unable to remember all battles in which he participated, since she was in her middle nineties at the time of the application. However, she did recall the battles of Monmouth, Bunker Hill, and Sullivan's Island. She also stated that he had learned the trade of a baker in London. the pension was never granted, because Lovis died before she could complete the necessary proof needed by the Ware Department."
