The Salyer Family Genealogy and Records of their first 250 Years in America by Elizabeth L.W. Salyer Privately Published and reprinted by the Magoffin County Historical Society:
Mary was first married to Wiley Morgan. They lived close to her father, at Salt Lick of Beaver. Mary's brother Fielding Salyer killed Wiley. Following is the story as told in Elizabeth Salyer's book: Wiley Morgan and Fielding Salyer had ridden to Lackey, Kentucky and were on their way home. They had been drinking and started to quarrel. Wiley then told Fielding "I'm a better man than you Fielding in anything you want to try". Field pulled a knife and killed Wiley. They were on the property of John B Martin at the time. Fielding rode to his father's house and told his father his version of what happen. His father ordered him to leave. Supposedly Samuel Salyer helped Fielding leave the area. They rode to Catlettsburg where Fielding boarded a boat and traveled down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Arkansas and then up the Arkansas River to northwestern Arkansas.
