Farelena Picklesimer Salyer was born on July 31, 1857 in Floyd, Kentucky, United States, daughter of Samuel Salyer (1812–1890) and Margaret Picklesimer (~1822–1906).[1]

In the 1860 census Farlena (age 5) was in Magoffin, Kentucky living with her uncle's family.[2]
