Notes

Robert was a son or younger brother of Moses Samples, a Greenbrier County taxpayer in 1790. At that time Moses was the head of the only Samples family living in what later became West Virginia.

Oren Frederic Morton in his "History of Monroe County, West Virginia" wrote that Robert Samples was a resident of Monroe County in 1799. The family was counted in Monroe County in the 1800 Census and again in 1810 but in 1820 they were living in Brown County, Ohio. In 1830 Mary and most of the children had returned to West Virginia and were living in Kanawha County. Robert was not mentioned so it is assumed that he died sometime between 1820 and 1830. In 1840 Mary was still in Kanawha County as were some of the children while others were living in Nicholas County and some were unaccounted for. The 1850 Census of Kanawha County listed Mary as being a resident in the home of her daughter and son-in-law Lewis and Mary Young. Another son-in-law, Ralph Smith, reported that she died on 20 Dec 1856. She apparently was between 86 and 88 years old.

He cannot be son of Samuel because he would have been mentioned in the 1776 will and was too young to be the co-executor.
