Biography

Mathieu Samson was born August 14, 1709[1][2], in Port-Royal, Acadia, the son of Gabriel Samson and Jeanne Martin. He married Marguerite Pouget, dite Lapierre, abt 1730, in Port-Toulouse, Île Royale.

Mathieu and Marguerite had:

  1. Pierre Samson Pierre, b. abt. 1735, Port-Toulouse, d. bef. 1811, L'Ardoise, Cape Breton.
  2. Jean Samson Jean-Baptiste, b. abt. 1736, Port-Toulouse; d. bef. 1811, River Bourgeois, Cape Breton.
  3. François Samson Francois, b. abt. 1738, Port-Toulouse; d. December 1829, L'Ardoise.
  4. Isabelle Francoise Samson Louise "Isabelle", b. abt. 1739, Port-Toulouse; d. bef. 1813, L'Ardoise.
  5. Charlotte Samson Charlotte, b. abt. 1744, Port-Toulouse; d. September 02, 1815, L'Ardoise.
  6. Bruno Samson Bruneau, b. abt. 1745, Port-Toulouse; d. aft. 1811, L'Ardoise[3].
  7. Mathieu-Martin, b. April 20, 1747, Beaubassin (Amherst), Nova Scotia; d. bef. 1752.
  8. Anne Samson Anne "Jeanne", b. abt. 1749, Nova Scotia; d. abt 1789 in Quebec.

Residence 1752

From 1752 census, at Port-Toulouse: "Mathieu Samson, coaster, native of Port Royal, aged 42. Married to Marguerite Lapierre, native of la Cadie, aged 42 years. They have four sons and three daughters: Pierre Samson, aged 17 years; Jean Samson, aged 16 years; François Samson, aged 14 years; Bruneau Samson, aged 7 years; Isabelle Samson, aged 13 years; Charlotte Samson, aged 8 years; Jeanne Samson, aged 3 years. They have been granted two years rations, and have been in the colony since 1730. They have three oxen, seven cows and two fowls. The land they occupy was granted to them verbally by Messieurs de St. Ovide and Le Normand. They have made a clearing for a garden and a piece of ground four arpents in extent for a meadow[4][5].

Mathieu Samson, habitant caboteur, natif du Port Royal, agé de 42 ans, marié avec Marguerite Lapierre, native de la cadie, agée de 42 ans. Ils ont 4 garçons et 3 filles : Pierre Samson, agé de 17 ans. Jean Samson, agé de 16 ans. François Samson, agé de 14 ans. Bruneau Samson, agé de 7 ans. Isabelle Samson, agée de 13 ans. Charlotte Samson, agée de 8 ans. Jeanne Samson, agée de 3 ans. On leur a donné les vives du Roy pendant deux ans. Ils sont dans la colonie depuis 1730. Ils ont 3 boeufs, 2 vaches et 7 poulles. Le terrain qu'ils occupent ne leur a été accordé que verballement par Messieurs de St Ovide et Le Normand, ils y ont fait un deffriché pour un jardin, et un dezert de quatre arpents en superficie pour une prairie.

Mathieu-Francois Samson likely died in l'Ardoise, NS in 1752. It appears that his wife, Marie-Josephe Poujet (probably Pouget), was married possibly 3 times.

Samson-1101 and Samson-144 appear to represent the same person because: I entered Samson-1101 and for some reason it was not flagged to be skipped or I missed it. The information that is under Samson-144 is more accurate.
