Biography

Johanna Roseline Sanders was born about 1853 in Nelson, New /Zealand [citation needed]. her mother's name was mary Moeller.

Marriages

  • At age 17, in 1869, she married Solomon Maurice Spiers in Ross, New Zealand but her name on the marriage certificate was Johanna Rosalie Moeller[1][2]

Their first child was Alexander Barnett Spiers born 1872[3]. On this birth certificate, her name is Annie. Alexander is the sole recipient of his father's will in 1907. She was 24 years old when their daughter Charlotte May Spiers was born in 1876 and died either at birth or during her first year[4]. They then had four sons - Victor Phineas born 1878, Bertrand Frederick born 1881, Edgar born 1883 and Sidney Morris born 1885. She was 32 years old. She divorced Solomon in 1886 in Hokitika, Westland[5] the Supreme court proceedings do not paint Johanna in a good light.

  • She married Stephen Darlington Oxnam in 1888 in Auckland, New Zealand[6].

They had two children; son, Noel and a daughter, Roseline Elizabeth Darlington Oxnam in 1890 in Murchison, Tasman[7]. Four years later, Stephen died on 22 May 1894 aged 44.

  • The following year, Johanna married again in 1895, to Digby Dennet Hunt (also known as Digby Frederick Sylvester Dennet Hunte). He was a hotel keeper in Nelson until, at least 1906.

The local newspaper read: Marriages Hunte & Oxnam. On the 20th April, 1895, at Nelson, by the Rev. Mr McKenzie, Digby Hunte, late of Buller to Rosina Oxnam, Fern Flat, Buller. Around 1906, Digby Hunt left and went to Wellington where he was assumed to have commited suicide in the bush In 1911, Johanna was living with her daughter, Roseline and her husband, in Palmerston North. She was 58 years old. By 1916, she had moved to 12 Paradise Rd, Napier, where she died at 63 years[8]. [9]. [10]. Her headstone reads: IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR DEAR MOTHER Roselin Hunte Died March 19 1916 aged 63 years. At Rest

Woman of Mystery

Johanna changed her name so many times that it has been hard to find a birth certificate for her but her name on her first marriage to solomon was Johanna Rosalie Moeller.

Johanna Rosalie Spiers (Moeller), my great great grandmother was married to Solomon Maurice Spiers, my great great grandfather. They lived in Kumara, West Coast, New Zealand during the gold rush around 1975. None of my family is aware of any connection by Johanna, after their divorce in 1888, with anyone Oxnam or Hunte, nor of a birth name of Sanders. The only information I have is that she departed to Christchurch with Barnett and their baby after the Spires v Spiers and Barnett court case. Can you help me with the connections you have found or any sources?

Sanders-16856 and Sanders-6769 appear to represent the same person because: Because Johanna married 3 times, we have worked worked on this and it has clashed together.

She certainly is a mystery! I found these images searching under Spiers on Nelson Provincial Museum website.

https://collection.nelsonmuseum.co.nz/objects?query=Spiers

There are two photos of S. M. Spiers looking directly to camera and then one of a woman and boy with long hair. The woman is Johanna Rosalie and the boy is most likely my great grandfather Alexander Barnett born 1872. You can see she is much older than she would have been if she was 17 at her wedding in 1869. I also found some Moellers in the same image search who look like they could be related to Johanna.

Would love to hear any more thoughts.
