Abijah Sanderson was born at Lunenburg on July 2, 1795, son of Jonathan Sanderson and Mehitable (___/? Spofford). [2]
He married Chastina Davis on February 4, 1819 at Shirley, Massachusetts. Chastina was born at Shirley on April 29 1798, daughter of John Davis and Anee/Emme Holden. [3][1]
In his father Jonathan Sanderson's will, written on June 20, 1839 and proved in 1841, he noted that after wife Mehitable's death or marriage, his estate should be equally divided among his children, with the exception that from son Abijah's share should be deducted $200.00 as the value of a note given to Abijah on March 29, 1839. [4]
His mother Mehitable died on September 18, 1847 at Lunenburg, and all her heirs requested that Abijah Sanderson of Lowell, be appointed administrator of her estate, which was approved by the court. [5]
On June 28,1861 widow Chastina Sanderson petitioned the court to be appointed administratrix of her husband Abijah Sanderson's estate, who had died intestate. The petition was granted. His inventory, submitted to the court on September 3, 1861, had a real estate assessment of $2133.00, which consisted of his farm at $1500.00 of 85 acres and a wood lot at $633.00 and personal items valued at $691.20. [7]
Chastina petitioned the court for her rights in the homestead, and the court set-off the privileges in the dwelling house and 30 acres, assessed at $800.00 to her in May, 1862. [7]
Chastina notified the court of debts against her husband's estate and administrative costs and was licensed to offer her husband's real estate at public auction. The real estate auction netted $544. 83. The following heirs signed their consent to the estate sale:
Attached was a note indicating among the heirs, one son was away at war, but sent his consent [7] This was most likely son Henry. [8]
Chastina notified the court that the estate, including Abijah's personal inventory totaled $1236.03 with debts and expenses amounting to $1838. 19. The estate was declared insolvent in the amount $602.16 on her presentation on July 2, 1862. [7]
Chastina presented, in a later accounting, the sale of some personal items. On March 3, 1863, Chastina petitioned for an allowance, as the original real estate allowance/privileges amounting to $800.00 previously granted in May, 1862, had been sold. The court decreed the previous allowance as void and granted her the amount of $255. 80 out of the remaining personal estate. [7]
