Biography

10th GOVERNOR OF THE COLONY OF RHODE ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS (1680 to 1683)

Peleg was born in 1639 at Newport RI To John Sanford and his second wife Bridget Hutchinson. Sanford grew up in Newport and as a young man was appointed as a Captain of a troop of horse there. Following the events of King Phillips War, he and Capt. Goulding informed Capt. Church of the hiding location of the Indian warrior King Phillip and the following day the Indian was found and killed. He married Mary Brenton in 1665 - no children produced by this union and she died in 1676. In 1677 he and Richard Bailey were chosen as agents to go to England to deal with incursions made by the neighboring colony of Connecticut. In 1679 he became a major and in 1687 he was given the rank of lieutenant colonel. He began his political life in 1667 at age 28 (to read more of his life go to Peleg Sanford Wikipedia) He married for the second time a Mary Coddington (daughter of Governor William Coddington) and had seven children with this wife. Peleg wrote his will in 1701, it was proved 1 September 1701. In his will he appointed, Francis Brinley, Nathaniel Coddington and Andrew Willett his executors and the guardian of his minor children: Peleg, William, Bridget and Elizabeth.
