Biography

Margaret Barker Landers was the only child of Rev. Stephen Presson Landers and Emily Barker. She was born on 12 Feb 1848 in West Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. This town was renamed to Arlington in 1867. (The town of Arlington, Middlesex County, was formerly West Cambridge. On February 27, 1807, a part of Cambridge was established as West Cambridge. On February 25, 1842, a part of Charlestown was annexed to West Cambridge. On April 13, 1867, the name of the town of West Cambridge was changed to Arlington, which remained to this day.)

Margaret remained single for many years. She was an illustrator for several children's books and taught painting classes. She was a member of the Universalist Church of the Reconciliation in Utica, and a member of Oneida Chapter, D.A.R.

Miss Margaret B. Landers married widowed Rev. Webster Bettes Randolph (a.k.a. Asa B. Howe) on 26 Aug 1889 in Kirkland, Oneida, New York. The marriage record was issued in Clinton, Oneida Co., New York.[1],[2]

After Webster passed away, she married William Henry Sanford on 8 Sep 1896 in Oneida Co., New York, as his second wife. She outlived him in 1902,

She had no children, but had several step-sons and step-daughters.

She spent most of her life in Clinton and Utica, Oneida Co., New York.

Margaret Sanders passed away on 25 Jul 1938 in Clinton, Oneida Co., New York. She is buried with her second husband at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Clinton, Oneida Co., New York. She has a marker already engraved in her name at Newark Cemetery in Newark, Wayne Co., New York. (Obviously, they had made plans for her to be buried there but that didn't happen. So now it's a cenotaph).

  • Note that The ORIGINAL birth record clearly says WEST Cambridge. In 1867, this town was renamed to ARLINGTON. This record is typed, obviously transcribed from the original West Cambridge records to the typed Arlington records.
