James was born in 1791 to Benjamin Sanford Freedom Strong in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia.
James married Sarah Woolaver. They were the parents of 11 children: Sarah, Rachel, Levi, Lois Amelia (first wife of Thomas Loney), Benjamin, Maria (who married William MacDougall and whose daugher, Sarah, was the second wife of Thomas Loney), Amelia, Catherine, Mary, James and Nathan. James and his wife Sarah, and a number of their children moved west, most settling in Grass Valley.
Headstone Inscription: Died at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 26 days.
