Biography

Piety was listed, died at 104 years of age on the 1880 mortality schedule, but census ages from earlier years would put her at about 94. She is buried on some of the property, known as the Adkins Family Cemetery, about six miles North of Homer. Piety purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land on February 7th, 1855, in Claiborne Parish. At this time, she was about 69 years old. This land was probably purchased with some of the money from Zaccheus' estate. She seems to have been much better off financially during this time than when she was in Georgia. In 1850, in Georgia, she owned nine slaves and in 1860, in Louisiana. she owned sixteen. She also owned one-half interest in a sawmill.[1]

Piety Prudence Sansing Adkins was the daughter of Charles and Mary Sansing and was born in Bute Co. NC. Her husband Zaccheus F. Adkins died in York County, SC. She lived in York County, SC, and Henry County, GA before moving to Claiborne Parish, Louisiana in 1852. She and her children, Mary Ann Lewis, Elizabeth T. Merritt, William J. Adkins, Lemiah Christopher Columbus Adkins, and Jane Sansing all came to Claiborne Parish. Another son Lewis stopped in Mississippi and son Zaccheus F. Adkins died a short time before the move. His wife Nancy and his daughters Martha Jane and Sarah Prudence came to Louisiana with the rest of the Adkins families. [2]

Piety's daughters Lona Polina and Malinda F. Adkins both died in Henry County, Georgia[2]
