Biography

Elizabeth Sandford, b. after 24 April 1677; d. after December 1709 when she was mentioned in the will of her sister Grace, and possibly before 1715.[1]

She m. in New York by licence dated 30 April 1702, James Davis.[2]

He might be the Jacobus [the Latin form of James] b. in 1675 to Joris Christoffelse Davidts and Jannetje Loopers [Loper], “a mariner of NYC [who] ... quit-claimed [in September 1706] to Hendricus Beekman land of his late father in Kingston.”[3]

The same source goes on to suggest that “he is alleged to have married Maria Marius and moved to Essex Co., NJ where he had [six] children,” a marriage found recorded for 1715 in New York marriage records.”[4]

A deed dated 2 July 1717 from Johannis and Catherine Van Emburgh of New Barbadoes to Gilbert Van Emburgh mentions adjacent land of James Davis, which is consistent with the bequests in Sarah Sandford’s will to daughters Catherine and Elizabeth of 300 acres of woodland and 100 acres of meadow each.[5]

William Sandford, as the executor for the estate of his mother Sarah Sandford, sued James Davis in 1720-1721 for £500, describing him as “James Davis of New Barbadoes.” No record of children for this couple has been found.
