Biography

Aphra was a widow of Phillip FitzGibbon of Castlegrace who died in 1734, ^[1] before she married Richard Bagnall.^[2] She had 6 children by FitzGibbon and 2 daughters by Richard Bagnall. She was a daughter of Robert Sargent of Castlegrace. They lived at Bangalore, India before Richard settled at Piercetown. ^[3]

In her father's will dated 1716 Robert Sargent, Gent of Castlegrace, Co. Tipperary, leaves everything to his wife Alice, and three daughters, Aphra, Alice and Anne. His son John is left only twenty shillings. A Phillip FitzGibbon of Castlegrace wrote his will in 1734, and his wife's name was Aphra, proving that John's banishment was permanent. (It could be possible that the John Sargent was the father of William Sargent of Limerick who was the father of Francis who was the 1759 Mayor ) Robert was a protestant and specified in his will that his three daughters were to marry protestants or be disinherited. His will was proved in 1716.^[4]
