William Sargent, a pioneer resident of Fort Wayne, died very suddenly at his home, 14 Marion Street, last night. He appeared as well as usual until 7:30, when he called in a neighbor and asked him to go for Dr. Stultz. Before the physician arrived the old gentleman was beyond all hope of recovery, and he expired soon afterward. Dr. Crull, who was deputized by Coroner Kappel to view the remains, will render a verdict that death was due to old age. The remains were taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Hazzard, 39 Marion Street.
Mr. Sargent was born in Ramsden, England, Sept. 18, 1817. He landed in America July 4, 1836, and came to Fort Wayne, locating on a farm in the outskirts of the city. On June 18, 1845, he was married to Miss Esther Richardson, who departed this life June 24, 1861. The union was blessed by four children, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Louis Hazzard, William Sargent, Jr., and Thomas Sargent, all of this city, and Mrs. Lucinda Benner of Tiffin, O.
The deceased has lived in Fort Wayne almost continuously since he came to America. For sixteen years he has lived the life of a hermit in a little one room house where he died. Repeated invitations from his children to make his home with them has resulted only in a repetition of his saying that he preferred living by himself. When taken ill some time ago he went to the home of his daughter and remained there seven weeks. Six weeks ago he returned to his own home.[10]
