Biography

Thomas Sargent was born at Amesbury, Massachusetts on March 20, 1727/8, son of John and Hannah (Quimby) Sargent. [1] [2]

He married Sarah Clement at Amesbury on September 22, 1748. Sarah was baptized there on April 5, 1730, daughter of Jonathan Clement [1] [2] and Mary Greenleaf. [3]

The family remained in Amesbury throughout their lives where Thomas was a farmer and yeoman. [4]

Sarah's father Jonathan Clement, in his will written on November 7, 1761, left daughter Sarah Sargent, wife of Thomas, L 10s in addition to what I already have given her. [5]

He is named in the will of his father Captain John Sargent, written on May 17, 1762. [6]

Thomas died at Amesbury on March 16, 1794, aged 67. [1] [2]

Thomas wrote his will on May 3, 1792 an submitted to court on April 28, 1794. In it he names: [4]

Thomas' personal inventory, taken on July 9, 1794 was assessed at L179 11s 6d, and consisted of clothing, household goods and furnishings, farm animals and implements of farming. His real estate was assessed at L664 8s including the homestead with buildings and 40 acres at L500, 1/2 of a sawmill, 2 seats at the meeting house, salt marsh at Newbury, and 3 lots in Kingstown. [4]

His widow Sarah died there on March 10, 1814, aged 84. [1] [2]

After his mother's death, Seth Sargent submitted an accounting to the court of the debts owed by Thomas' estate amounting to $2169.04. Included were the legacies to the children, plus interest since their father's decease, including sons John and Joshua and daughters Prudence Hills, Rachel Currier and Lois Coffin, and the heirs of Sarah Sargent. [4]

On March 7, 1815, Seth Sargent, executor of Thomas' estate, notified the court that he would, to the best of his ability, to handle the sale of Thomas' real estate to the best advantage of interested persons. [4]
