Parent Counties and Districts of Union County
Until the border between North and South Carolina was established in 1772, there was confusion about where the area that would eventually become Union County was located. Thus, early Union County land grants can be found in both states.
At various times during history, Union County was considered to be part of the following counties: Anson County, NC (formed in 1749); Mecklenburg County, NC (formed in 1763); Tryon County, NC (formed in 1769); Old Berkely County, SC (formed in 1683); Old Craven County, SC (formed in ???); St. Mark's Parish, SC (formed in 1757); and Ninety-Six (96) Judicial District, SC (formed in 1769).
Union County, South Carolina was established from the Ninety-Six (96) District in 1785. In 1791, the Pinckney Judicial District was established, comprising Union, Spartanburg, York, and Chester counties. In 1800, the judicial districts were abolished, and Union County was known as Union District from 1800 to 1868.
In 1897, the northern portion of Union County was taken to form part of Cherokee County, SC. This area included Draytonsville and Goudiesville Townships.
Union County Geography
Union County is bordered on the east by the Broad River and Chester and York Counties; on the north by the Pacolet River and Cherokee County; on the west by Spartanburg County; on the southwest by the Enoree River and Laurens County; on the south by Newberry County; and on the southeast by the Tyger River and Fairfield County. Click here to view the links to SC GenWeb pages for Neighboring Counties.
As of July 1960, Union County consisted of eight townships. Union Township is located in the center of the county. The remaining seven townships are (clockwise): Jonesville (northwest), Pinckney (northeast), Santuck (east-central), Fishdam (southeast), Goshen Hill (south), Cross Keys (southwest), Bogansville (west - central).
The following are some towns that are located in present-day Union County: Union - the county seat (9,836 population, 1990 census), Jonesville (1,205), Carlisle (470), West Springs (150), Kelton (130), Adamsburg (80), Lockhart (58), and Cross Keys (50).

Event

Event:
Date: FROM 1751 TO 1761
Place: History, Union County, South Carolina[10]
Note: The migration of European settlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania into Union County as early as 1751 was encouraged by the availability of free frontier land. This migration was accelerated by the Treaty of 1755 between South Carolina Governor James Glen and Old Hopp (the principal Cherokee chief), which ceded the land to the South Carolina province. The Cherokees made raids on Union and other frontier settlements until they were defeated in the Cherokee War, which ended in 1761.
Event:
Date: 1795
Place: cared for brother, George W. Sartor, age 8[11]
Note: On the death of John P. Sartor 1733/1795, George W. Sartor was a minor about eight years of age. William Sartor, older brother, was appointed legal guardian. However, it was his sister Mary Ann Hollingsworth who cared for him. George went with the Hollingsworth when they migrated to Knox Co., Indiana about 1804.
Event:
Date: 1812
Place: son Daniel, killed by indians[12]
Note: Daniel Hollingsworth and a man named Honeycutt were hunting near the forks of Marie Creek in 1812. The two became separated. Honeycutt saw two Indians going in the direction of his companion. Through timidity he failed to fire upon them yet he had a good opportunity. Soon he heard a shot, and Hollingsworth fell dead. The Indians scalped him and left the body.
