Biography

William Augustus Sauer was born the son of Heinrich (Henry) Christian Sauer and Maria Catherine Rechtenbach. They are buried in Circle Grove Cemetery. He was married to Harriet Phelinda Buckingham on September 18, 1889 in Buchanan County, Iowa. She is buried in this cemetery. They were life time farmers. Gus died of a stroke. They were parents of nine children: Ica Dale Sauer Peyton, Jesse Gurd Sauer, Arthur Ivan Sauer, Lydia Ann Sauer Walton, William Arthur Sauer, Clyde Frederick Sauer, Lois Viola Sauer Peyton, Harley Oliver Sauer, Willard LeRoy Sauer.

~0bit~William Augusta Sauer, 68 years of age, and a resident of this community nearly all his life, died Monday morning about 4 o'clock at the home of his son, Arthur Sauer, one mile north of Troy Mills following an illness of eight months. A son of Henry and Marie Sauer, he was born on February 14, 1868 in Buchanan county near Troy Mills. September 18, 1889, he was married to Miss Harriet Buckingham. Nine children were born of this marriage, Ica, Jesse, Ivan, Lydia Ann, Arthur, Clyde, Lois, Harley and LeRoy. Mrs. Sauer died December 19, 1929. Surviving him are five sons, Clyde, Harley and LeRoy, of Waterloo, Arthur and Jesse, of near Troy Mills, two daughters, Mrs. Lydia Ann Walton, Mrs. Lois Peyton, of Quasqueton; twenty-seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral servces were held Wednesday afternoon. Burial was made in the Troy Mills Cemetery by the side of his wife.
