Wilhelm Sauer was born in Bromberg, Prussia (now Bydgoszcz, Poland) on December 10, 1893. He emigrated to Canada with his parents and older siblings in 1896. They left the port of Hamburg, Germany on July 4, 1896, sailing on the vessel Sicilia, and arrived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on July 22, 1896. Wilhelm and his family first stopped in Grenfell, Quebec, then moved to Assiniboia East, The Territories, and then settled in Saskatchewan and lived at various times in the hamlets of Lemberg and Neudorf. His younger four siblings were born in Canada. Wilhelm came to be known as William or Bill once in Canada.
Wilhelm married Anna Ziolkowski on November 28, 1917, in Saskatchewan. Their first child, Lillian Agnes Sauer, was born on May 25, 1919, in Southy, Saskatchewan. Their second child, Selma Doris Sauer, was born on August 10, 1923, in Neudorf, Saskatchewen. Their third child, Ildon Victor Norton Sauer, was born on September 7, 1923, in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Wilhelm and Anna moved many times and Wilhelm pursued many careers. He died on August 16, 1964 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Source records have not been found that directly prove that the first three children of Eduard Sauer and Barbara Nessel were born in Bromberg, Prussia, however, records have been found that show that an Eduard Sauer was living in Bromberg during the time period when the latter two of these children were born.
