August was born on 11 Nov 1860, the son of Ferdinand Sauer and Maria Elisabetha Lehn.[1] He married Anna Broker on 26 Jun 1888 in Collegeville.[2] They had children Josephine, Otto, William, Henry and Mary Ann. August worked as a blacksmith and farmer. He died on 8 Jun 1940[3] and was buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Buckman.[4]
From his 1937 WPA biography:
"August Sauer attended the elementary schools in Germany until his 14th year. His father was a blacksmith by trade. August helped in the shop for three years after he left school. Then he learned the shoe-maker trade, studying for three years and then working as an apprentice for three years.
In 1883 he came to America, direct to John Jansen's [Janson's] place in Buckman, Mr. Jansen [Janson] being his brother-in-law. There he stayed five months. He then worked for Gottlieb Kuschel of Buckman on the farm for seven months. Then he hired out to William Dahlmeier of Buckman working on the farm for two years. After that he worked on the St. John's College Farm at Collegeville, Minnesota, as teamster for two years.
June 26, 1888, he married Elizabeth Broker. She was the daughter of Henry and Mary Broker of Collegeville, Minnesota, and was born in Richmond, Stearns County, Minnesota, and died in Buckman October 14, 1919.
After his marriage Mr. Sauer rented a 160-acre farm in Buckman which was later the Frank Weis Farm, for three years. Then he rented the 80-acre Hollenbeck Farm one mile east of the present "Little Rock," for three years. Thereafter he rented the 160-acre Buckout farm for one year, and then the Hollenbeck Farm again for two years. In 1894 he bought 160 acres wild brush land on which he began to grub and break. He built a rough board shanty on it, and a log barn. In this shanty the family lived five years. After that he bought a five room frame house from the McBride Farm, a few miles west of his place, and moved it onto his land. In 1908 he built a large frame barn. In 1902 he bought the 60-acre Bartell Farm, one and a half miles northeast of Little Rock. In 1910 he bought the 80 acre Tom Lamb farm adjoining his place on the south and in 1919 he bought a 160-acre partly improved farm in southeast Buckman township, on which his son Henry is living now. He also built a granary, chicken coop, hog barn, garage and machine shef on his home place. He has 240 acres of land under plow, the balance is pasture, meadow and wood land.
Mr. Sauer retired from work and his son Otto has rented the farm and they all live together there. He is a member of the Little Rock Farmers Creamery Association; he helped organize it and was one of the directors of their board for fifteen years. He also held the office of Town Supervisor in Buckman for seven years. He is a member of St. Michael Church and helped to build it, also the parsonage, home, school and community hall."
