Maude was living on Amherst Island when she met Jim Saunders. They eloped and married in Cape Vincent. He was a Great Lakes sailor, soon to be made captain of his vessel. She was living in Cleveland in 1891 and in New Orleans in 1904. She is included in her mother’s will of 1927 as Mrs. Maude E. Simpson, widow, of Lillydale, N.Y. Captain James Saunders sailed with the Boland Cornelius Line of Buffalo. On his last trip the steamer went aground near Sault Ste. Marie in late October, the crew was stranded for a time and Captain Saunders got a chest infection which resulted in his early death at his home in Buffalo during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1916.
* Died: Saunders – In Buffalo, N. Y., March 19, 1916. Capt. James M. aged 55 years; husband of Maude E. (nee Howard), father of Mrs. H. C. Guess and Thomas Howard Saunders. Services will be held from his late residence. No. 234 Berlin street, Monday afternoon, March 20. 1916 at 3 o’clock. Interment at Stella, Ontario. Deceased was a member of the Shipmasters Lodge No. 1. Cleveland papers please copy.
