Biography

Albert Augustus Sanders Jr. was the son of Albert Augustus Saunders and Polly Curry Saunders. He was born in the Bahamas in 1828.

Albert was, apparently, quite the ladies man. He had four wives, three at the same time - one in Hope Town, one in Green Turtle Cay, and another in Key West. He married first, Lenora Lowe in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco in 1845; he married second, Isabella Weatherford about 1848 in Hope Town; and third, he married Elizabeth Jane Roberts in April 1849 in Key West. According to accounts, Isabella found out and reverted to using her last name of Weatherford. And Elizabeth Roberts remained in her marriage.

"When a young man he went to Key West, where on April 2, 1849 he married Elizabeth Roberts, of a prominent Key West family of that name ... In 1852 Mr. Saunders removed with his wife and two children to Manatee county and located at what is now Oneco. He was one of three families, all related, who founded a settlement in what was then a wilderness ... Newcomers increased in numbers from year to year until there has grown up a large and lively settlement, with a post office called Oneco, a school and some of the finest orange groves in Florida .. On June 14, 1871, the [first] wife of Mr. Saunders died, leaving eight children.. Mr. Saunders married Miss Almeta Ann Smith, born in Wilcox County, AL .. August 1, 1851, daughter of J. N. and Ann (Nettles) Smith, both natives of Alabama.. "

Albert Augustus Saunders Jr. died in Oneco, Manatee County, Florida. Buried at the Old Cemetery, Manatee, Florida.
