She was married three times and had six sons and seven daughters with her first husband, Stephen Buster. She died on February 18, 1881, in Perry, Kansas, at the age of 63, and was buried there.

Joseph was brother-in-law to Seth Shoemaker. Catherine Nelson's sister Ruth married Seth Shoemaker's son Wilson Shoemaker. After Catherine's death, Joseph married Jennetta Saunders Buster, and became the step father-in-law to of Wilson Shoemaker's daughters, Asenath and Margaret Jane.
