Girl Killed - Collision at East Fremantle

Leah Eunice Saunders 19 who resided with her parents at Cottesloe died in a private hospital in East Fremantle yesterday afternoon as a result of injuries received in a collision with a motor cycle late on the previous evening. According to the police report the deceased accompanied by a female friend was walking along Canning Road towards Fremantle when she was struck by a motor cycle ridden by William Jackson Sumpton and hurled to the ground. She was taken to a nearby surgery in an unconscious condition and after receiving attention to severe scalp and body injuries was conveyed to a friend's house. Towards midnight her condition became worse and Dr Stubb who was summoned ordered her removal to hospital. She died of concussion at 2.00pm without regaining consciousness. An inquest has been ordered.

Cemetery records give religion as Anglican.

The family story was that Leah was walking with her two younger sisters Millie and Lil when a motorcycle mounted the footpath and struck her.

  • Leah was born on the 12th March according to the Longfellow birthday book. Her age is obscured in her father's death record but she is listed as the third child after Millie and before Lilly whose ages were 10 and 4 respectively. this means she was born between 1906 and 1910.

According to her death notice she was 19 when she died and working back from that her birthday would be 12/07/1907.
