Biography

Born to a single mother in England, she immigrated to San Francisco at 18 and lived under the care of Mrs. Quantack.

She met Richard in San Francisco, giving birth to their first 2 children in Alviso, Santa Clara, California, near San Francisco. In 1860, their household in Alviso Township consisted of: Richard Carr (42), Emily Carr (24), Edith Carr (5), and Clara Carr (3).^[1]

Emily and Richard returned to England with their daughters. In England, she gave birth to 2 sons who died in early infancy.

Upon immigrating to Victoria, BC, she had 3 daughters and one son. In 1881, the Carr household consisted of: Richard Carr (62), Emily Carr (44), Edith Carr (25), Clara Louisa Carr (23), Elizabeth Carr (13), Alice Carr (11), Emily Carr (9), Richd Henry Carr (5) plus one unrelated adult.^[2] Their second-youngest child was the artist Emily Carr.

She passed away in 1886^[3] at home in Victoria BC and was buried in the Ross Bay Cemetery, Victoria, British Columbia.
