Biography

Jonathan Saunders served with New Hampshire Line during the American Revolution.

Jonathan Saunders was born on 17 Oct 1747, at Chester, Province of New Hampshire, ^[1] and died on 19 May 1828, probably in New York, United States, based on the fact that he filed for his pension in 1818 from Franklin County, New York. ^{[2] [3]} His last Pension Voucher shows a death date of 17 Mar 1837, but this is interpreted to be his widow's death date. The payment to his widow was made through Albany, New York, so New York, United States, has been used for her place of death ^[4]

Jonathan was the son of Jonathan Saunders (abt 1711-abt 1775) and Sarah Rowell (abt 1723-aft Sept 1761). ^[1] Jonathan and Sarah had at least nine children ^[5]

Jonathan served in the Revolutionary War in the New Hampshire Militia. He applied for a pension April 14, 1818 in Franklin, New York, United States. His wife Abigail applied for a pension after his death, in Lawrence, St. Lawrence, New York, United States. ^[2] He served in at least three Regiments, the 23rd Regiment, ^[6] Bedel's Regiment and ^[7] in the Independent Rangers ^[8] The only dated document is for the 23rd Regiment (Muster roll, Oct-Nov 1776) ^[9] He may have coincided with his brother Avery Saunders in two, Bedel's Regiment and the New Hampshire Independent Rangers. ^[10]

Jonathan married Abigail Batchelder (1747-1837) on 23 Jan 1772, in the Province of New Hampshire. ^[11] The marriage ended with his death on 19 May 1828. ^[3] Children were not located for John and Abigail although, apparently, they had at least two. ^[2]

Regarding the last name Saunders Note that the surname "Saunders" often appears as "Sanders" and in the information located for many members of the family, both surnames are found. Present-day family members go by the name Saunders and this is the LNAB that has been used in WikiTree for the family.
