Biography
Isaac Saunders in entry for Matilda Saunders, "Rhode Island, Births and Christenings, 1600-1914" lists him as born 07 Feb 1811, Birthplace: HOPKINTON,WASHINGTON,RHODE ISLAND (which would be consistent with the Rhode Island migration to Petersburg/ Grafton area.) Mother's name is Matilda.
In 1850 US Census, an Isaac Saunders is listed as 41, with a wife named Maretta, and a 19 year old daughter, Elizabeth. (That would be a two year discrepancy with Elizabeth's DOB, but close). Obviously, this record conflicts with the US Census records below.
The 1870 United States Federal Census for Isaac Saunders in Jefferson Co., Adams, NY lists him as a 59 year old farmer with his wife Matilda (52) and two boys (twins?) Albert and Thomas (both 17) living at home
Lived in Petersburg, NY for 1820 and 1830 US Census. 1860 US Census has him living in Pelham, Westchester, New York at age 63 with Eliza Saunders and some Bells (although the date matches up, this might not be the same person)
From "The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 20, No 41, p 163, Oct. 13, 1864:
At Adams, N.Y., Oct. 2d, 1864, Isaac Saunders, aged 81 years. Bro. Saunders had been in the enjoyment of usual health until about the first of August, when he seemed to fall into a decline, his strength gradually leaving him. His death, however, was quite sudden. Less than an hour before, he walked from one room to another, when lying down, he quietly breathed his last. He was born in Rhode Island, but at an early age removed with his parents to Rensselaer Co., N. Y. He there united with the Berlin Church, but subsequently removed to Adams. He was a substantial Christian, a strong man in community, one whose consel had been habitually sought and confided in by many. We feel that another father in Israel has fallen. There is only left to us the sacred memory and the power of his Christian life and example. Although there is a sadness connected with the death of such an one, yet it is pleasent,though mournful, for we can but see a beauty and a fitness in it, that the aged Christian, with his labors done, should be gathered in with the gathering of the autumn harvests.
Isaac was born in 1783. Isaac was the child of Isaac Saunders and Waity Hiscox. Isaac passed away in 1864.[1]
