Biography

Hannah Saunders was born around 1817 in New York, United States [1] and died around 01 July 1883, in Lawrence, St. Lawrence, New York, United States. She is buried at Hill Crest Cemetery in Lawrenceville, as is her husband. [2] She was the daughter of Jacob B Saunders (1792-abt 1869) [3] and Abigail Martin (1791-1850). [1] Jacob and Abigail had at least five children. According to Familysearch.org genealogies, their first child was Harriet Saunders (abt 1815-abt 1898), born in New York [4] and another four children appear in the 1850 census, also born in New York: [1]

Hannah married George E. Abbott (1806-abt 1878). The marriage date has been estimated @ before 12 Jun 1860 in New York, United States, based on the first census in which both appear together. [5] This was his second marriage, the first was to Lydia P Hart (abt 1806-1849) in 1831. [6] The marriage ended with George's death around 03 Jun 1878. [7] She died several years later around 1883. [2]

Jun 1860 Hannah Saunders appeared in the 1860 census on 12 Jun 1860 at the Town of Lawrence, St. Lawrence, New York, United States, "Hannah Abbott", 43 yrs, born in New York, with her husband "G E Abbott", 54 yrs, born in Vermont, Farmer, Real Estate Value $1000 and a boy, "Edson B Abbott", 13 yrs, born in New York, ostensibly George's son by his first marriage. [5]

Aug 1870 Hannah Saunders appeared in the 1870 census on 18 Aug 1870 at Lawrence, St Lawrence, New York, United States, "Hannah Abbott", 53 yrs, born in New York, Keeping house, Real Estate Value $600, with her husband, "G E Abbott", 64 yrs, born in Vermont, Farmer, Real Estate Value $1500, Personal Estate Value, $450, a young man, "C B Abbott", 23 yrs, born in New York, at home, ostensibly George's son by his first marriage, and her niece "Carrie Saunders", 15 yrs, born in New York, at school, NB Carrie is Roswell Saunders' daughter who was born in 1855 to his first wife Julia. Roswell was Hannah's brother. In 1870 he appears in his brother William's household in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He remarried soon after, in 1871. Julia, his first wife, probably died before in the period 1860-1870, but evidence of her death was not located. Carrie died in 1908, with the married name Calkins, at Easton, Ionia, Michigan. Roswell died earilier, in 1889. [8]

Research Notes

Regarding the mother Abigail Martin's surname has been taken from handwritten entries in a family New Testament, a scan of which is included in Wikitree Free Pages: 1813 New Testament Jacob B Saunders (1792-1860) & Family.

Regarding the Last Name Saunders Note that the surname "Saunders" often appears as "Sanders" and in the information located for many members of the family, both surnames are found. Present-day family members go by the name Saunders and this is the LNAB that has been used in WikiTree for the family.
