Biography

Ferne Marie Hooper, 90, passed from this life Tuesday, July 2, 2013. A lifelong follower of Jesus Christ, she worshipped regularly through the years with Church of Christ congregations in Stinnett, Fritch and Borger. Funeral: 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at Wiley Funeral Home. Burial: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Stinnett Cemetery in Stinnett, Texas. Visitation: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Ferne was born Dec. 6, 1922, in Achille, Okla., to Wesley Martin Savage and Ewell Ardean Savage. Along with brother Leroy and sister Billie Lavonne, Ferne spent some of her childhood years in Oklahoma. The family moved to the Borger area in 1933. Ferne graduated from Phillips High School in 1941 where she was active in the band. She also attended Draughon's Business College in Amarillo and worked for Phillips Petroleum Company during World War II. Ferne married Harold Hooper on October 6, 1943. Together they raised their six children in Stinnett. Ferne raised her children to love and serve God. Doing what she could to serve the homebound and elderly was a priority for Ferne. She was also active and supportive in all her children's school activities. She was a leader in Girl Scouts, a den mother in Cub Scouts, and mother of four Eagle Scouts. Ferne loved music and loved to sing. Joining with others to sing songs of praise was one of her greatest joys. She also loved to make Christmas candy. The most beautiful and delicious divinity seemed an effortless task for Ferne. Pies, homemade biscuits, and other baked goods from her kitchen were almost always picture perfect - just like her penmanship. Ferne was a substitute school teacher for many years in the Stinnett and Sanford-Fritch school systems. She was also employed by Avon and Southwest Research. Ferne was an active member in the Borger Music Club and the Hutchinson County Demonstration Club for many years. In 1990, Ferne and Harold moved to Fritch, where they lived until 2010, when they moved to Granbury. Ferne loved people. Everywhere she lived, Ferne made friends. Her home was always open to anyone who wanted to drop in for a visit. The coffee pot or tea kettle were always ready. There was seldom a day when someone did not drop by. Ferne was an excellent cook. Sunday dinners were always a special delight to her family and guests. She loved to share recipes and to keep up with her friends' activities and news of their families. Ferne also loved animals and shared her home with many beloved pets through the years. In most recent years she enjoyed watching birds, squirrels and the beauty of nature each day through her dining room window. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
