Henry was the head boy at Upper Canada College in its first year (1830), and in 1833 won the King's Scholarship, allowing him to attend St. John's College Cambridge. In 1838 he became a curate at St. James Cathedral, Toronto, the first rector of Holy Trinity Church in 1847, and Canon of the St. James Cathedral in 1867.

Scadding and his wife had one daughter, Henrietta Scadding, who married Robert Sullivan (1837-1870).
His life-long love of history led him to join the York Pioneer and Historical Society in 1869 and to serve as its president from 1880 to 1898.
