Biography

He was born about 1630 in North Walsham, Norfolk, England and his parents were Mary and Samuel Scarborough.

About 1656 he emigrated from England to North America.

William Scarborough married on 11 Oct 1660 Charles City County, Virginia to Naomi "Amy" Davis and left descendants in the county.

He participated in Bacon's rebellion for which he and 22 others were executed by order of Governor Berkeley and hanged to death on 16 Mar 1677 in Surry, Virginia.

His widow remarried to Thomas Tyus.

1668 William Scarbrow prosecuted by Phillip Limbry in an action of debt in ye next Court held in Surry County, Virginia. [3]

1668/Oct - Phillip Simbry appoints his brother, Benjamin Harrison, his attorney. Witnessed: William Scarbrow, George Riverton and William Nance. [4]

1669/Jun/23 William Scarbroo witnessed an indenture between Watkins and Lee [5]

1670/Jan/03 William Scarbrow witnessed an indenture between Lee and Watkins. [6]

1670/Jan/03 George Lee of Charles County, Virginia for 7000 pounds of tobacco, sells to George Watkins a gray mare. Witnesses: William Scarbrow and Thomas Payton. [7]

1672/Jan/26 William Scarbroo complaining to the court against the accounts of William Edwards for fees which amounted to three hundred ninety and seven pound of tobacco which said account was by the Court regulated and brought to two hundred and eighty pounds of tobacco, from which the said Edwards doth appeal unto the 3rd day of the next General Court. 1672/May/07 Mr. George Lee and John Rawlings present themselves, security in behalf of William Scarbrow, for ye estate of Walter Holdsworth’s orphans and ye Clerk ordered to take bond, May 7, 1672 Surry County. [9]

1673 A True List of Tithables in Surry County taken 10 June 1673 included William Scarbrough. [10]

1674 A List of Tithables Taken 10 June 1674 included William Scarbro. [11]

1674 Judgment was granted Lt. Colonel George Jordon against William Scarbrough for three hundred pounds of tobacco. [12]

1675/May/04 Administration was granted William Scarbroo on the estate of Ann Houlsworth, deceased, and proved by the oath of the witnesses. He gave security according to law. [13]

1676 Besides the above forty men and their leaders, bookings, Long, Rutherford, Whitson and Scarborough, the later suits and additional documents show us others involved in the rebellion. [14]

1676 William Scarborough was listed in court records as the last conspirator to receive a death sentence. [15]

1676\77/Feb/20 Governor Berkeley’s new Assembly met at Green Spring and Surry’s representatives were William Browne and Benjamin Harrison's new Burgesses. The first act of the assembly was to pass an act of indemnity and pardon in accordance with the King’s letters patent of 10 Oct 1676, but with twenty-five or thirty notable exceptions, among whom we have mentioned, bookings, whit son and Scarbrough and Long from Surry. [16]

1677 The Commissioners brought a pardon for the rebels from the King, but they could not halt the governor’s thirst for revenge and he carried on his series of trials and executions, only substituting civil trails for military court-martials on March 3rd. During this period of executions, two Baconians from Surry suffered the death penalty, On 16 Mar 1677, John Whitson and William Scarborough of Southwarke Parish were convicted of "Rebellions Treasons and other misdemeanors", were sentenced to death, and shortly executed, their estates also being confiscated (Minutes of the Council and General Court p459-460 Henig Statutes II p379). [17]

1677/Mar/05 Reference was granted Thomas Bird against Thomas Tias who married ye relict of William Scarbroo to ye Court. [18]

1694/Jun/20 John Rawlings, for himself and William Scarbrough hath surveyed and assigned all rights to Mr. Humphrey Allen in a certain patent of land. [19]

Research Notes

According to the records found by Teresa Langford, the father of this William Scarborough is Samuel B. Scarborough who was married to Mary (maiden name unknown).

There is another William in the family that is his half brother whose father is Col. Edmund Scarborough. Mary Ann married both Samuel and Edmund. By birth dates and other records William that is married to Mary (unknown) is the son of Samuel B. Scarborough.

William could not be the son of Samuel's wife#2, Jane because her marriage was 4 years after his birth. So William had to be the son of Samuel's first wife Mary.
